Bulletin 1.3 - The Wills Kit

Beware of the Wills Kit. It may enable you to prepare a valid Will but will it be adequate, considering your financial situation and estate planning issues?

You should prepare your own Will or find a $100.00 Will ONLY IF:

· You are single or legally married to your first spouse;
· You have no children under age 19;
· You have no beneficiaries under age 19;
· All of your assets are located in British Columbia;
· Your estate is modest;
· You do not own your own business; and
· The distribution of your estate is simple and immediate.

If you choose the Wills Kit, be prepared to educate yourself about what you are doing - get a book on Wills and read the Wills Act of British Columbia. Make sure you understand and follow all the instructions in the Wills Kit. The Wills Kit may tell you that no modifications can be made to its form.

Make sure you sign the Will exactly as required by the Wills Act of British Columbia. Don't make any changes to the Will after you have signed it.

If you don't qualify for the "simple Will" click here to see Bulletin 1.1 - Questions and Background regarding Wills.
